Gulf Oil Spill Solution

The U.S. Coast Guard testified that over 1,900 proposals have been reviewed by the Federal Interagency Alternative Technology Assessment Program (IATAP) and it has screened about 600 proposals. To date, no proposals have yet been deployed in the Gulf of Mexico. BP has received over 35,000 proposals to date and none deployed to the Gulf of Mexico.

From our country and from around the world oil companies, companies experienced in working with large fabric structures and private individuals and inventors have all been submitting inverted cone shaped designs similar to the Deepwater Oil Recovery System (DORS). You will see several of these designs below. Sometimes people just bloged about an idea or posted their idea on Facebook.  Many designs were formally submitted as White Papers to the Coast Guard’s web site and officially submitted to BP’s Deepwater Horizons Response Team. Some were posted to YouTube or emailed to us directly.  No mater whose design you look at the concept is sound and could be implemented in a matter of weeks if not days.

The inverted cone shaped design is unique in that it can work with broken well heads spilling crude oil, natural gas and methane vertically, fallen risers spilling horizontally and the system can capture oil and gas seeping from the ocean bottom originating from fissures in the seafloor. These fissures can result from human activities like a fractured lining of a well deep below the surface of the sea bottom or naturally occurring from the result of earthquake or other natural phenomenon.  The Deepwater Oil Recover System (DORS) can be stored in rolled segments ready to be quickly deployed to any point in the world in just a few hours.

Planet Resource Recovery, Inc. along with a group of corporate partners has developed a COMPLETE SOLUTION for stopping the Gulf oil spill, cleaning up the Gulf waters, shorelines and wetlands. The BP oil spill & resulting oil slick that occurred after the Transocean disaster when the Deepwater Horizon oil rig exploded & sank on April 20 killing 11 workers. This is the only organized plan for effectively dealing with all the issues surrounding the BP Gulf of Mexico Oil Spill. The FLUID CHANNEL collects the oil and gas plumb in a giant inverted funnel at the source. The plume grouped together rising by itself, becoming a free flowing stream of oil and gas when the whole plume is contained by this flexible membrane boundary such as a closed curtain of adequate cross section standing right up from the source to the surface. Volume to handle is limitless as it is always possible to design a sheath or sleeve large enough to allow free flow and expansion of gas going up without restriction. Total volume of oil and gas can thus be moved to the surface, free flowing, without the need of pumps or siphon of any kind. Once it has engaged within this continuous buoyant sheath for example 30 to 40 feet in circumference linking the forming plume over the BOP to the surface of the sea where the full flow can be contained within floating flexible tanks to be further loaded aboard tankers. To build this system it is estimated to take only 5 to 14 days. This has been submitted to BP Deepwater Horizons suggestion site and a an official Coast Guard White Paper

A system designed not to stop oil spills but merely contain the spill until the source of the spill is repaired. The system has three sections which are as follows from bottom to top, The Web, The Transport Tube and The Siphon.

The Web is a basically a large collapsed umbrella, which houses positioning thrusters, LED lighting for illumination at the bottom of the ocean, and video cameras to guide and monitor its decent and final destination.

The Transport Tube is a large plastic flexible tube which would be brought to the location in a large spool. Think of it as a very large continuous garbage bag on a spool ready to be rolled out.

And lastly is The Siphon section, which consists of a connection to the surface end of The Transport Tube, is a fitting to the current piping systems of the awaiting oil collection ships.

The in the area of a spill the system is brought together. First The Web and The Transport Tube are connected using locking clamps. The Transport Tube is not inflated but in fact flat. The reasons for this are two. One, this allows for a smooth decent into the ocean without the water rushing into the tube. And two, if the tube is filled with water, then when the oil begins to surface into the tube, the very nature of displacement would cause the water to be forced down and out the bottom of the tube clashing and causing turbulence with the oil entering in the mouth of The Collector. So once The Web and Transport Tube are connected to one another the two are lowered into the ocean. The Transport Tube is fed from its spool. This provides a custom and exact length of tubing for different spills.

The Web and Transport Tube are lowered down by a cable from a surface ship. A wired remote controls the on board thrusters to provide fine tune positioning, power to the LED lighting systems and cameras. Once over the spill The Collector hovers above the spill about 50 feet. Once in position The Collector deploys its web, opening as a large umbrella, its LED lights illuminate, and the seal which keeps The Transport Tube closed is released. Now the oil is free to fill The Transport Tube while on its way to the surface. This does two things, the first as it hovers above the damaged spill zone its collecting the oil. And two, The Collector rests ABOVE the spill to still allow repair crews under it to the damage section to administer repairs.

Once the oil reaches the surface in The Transport Tube is enters The Siphon area where it's collected by awaiting ships.

This is my dad's idea to help the BP and government to try and fix the oil spill, maybe it'll work? Let's hope so, because we are losing thousands upon millions of dollars and we can't afford to lose anymore. The U.S. and government needs as much help as it can get with this crisis, as the world is already heading into a second depression.. (copyrighted)

The concept and objective of the rapid oil spill containment system is not to 'plug a leak,' but rather to reduce the amount of interaction that the uncontrolled hydrocarbon release has with the ocean.

The goal is to confine the spill area so that recovery operations are more manageable.

In the concept presented, hydrocarbon, both oil and natural gas, from the compromised well is channeled into a large starfish-shaped tarp to a conduit at the apex. The tarp is constructed from Titanium mesh, but other materials, such as Kevlar® have been suggested. Hydrocarbons flow to the surface using a string of specially fabricated wire mesh pipe. The meshed pipe diameter is larger than conventional drill pipe. This pipe uses titanium mesh, but other materials could be considered. As the oil arrives on the ocean surface, it is confined to a relatively small area by conventional oil spill booms. Surface capture and transfer operations are therefore focused on an attenuated containment site.

The Montara blowout and subsequent oil spill in August 2009 that occurred offshore Australia, and the current Gulf of Mexico accident, strongly point to the need of having a quick method to minimize the impact that the spill has on the environment. The proposed ROCS could be developed so that it is available on a regional basis, with specially trained crews familiar with its use and deployment.

Solutions to contain the Gulf leak are at the forefront, and are certain to be followed by numerous hearings on future prevention. Dealing with the ongoing environmental and economic impact after containment is achieved will be a complicated effort. No one , to our knowledge, has addressed any future contingency planning. Conversely, current emergency contingencies have not been studied in a purposeful manner or updated since the early 1970's. Re-regulation of offshore operations is effectively a political certainty. Whoever solves the current and on-going problem, and who can supply logical and timely contingencies against future drilling missteps will be seen as an industry hero and their products will become commonplace if not SOP.

The tube can be dropped down from the surface and attached to the sea floor surrounding the leak. Cables or straps could be used to offer strength and/or guidance. The tube has no constriction and, therefore allows the oil to rise to the surface as it normally would, but will remain within the confines of the tube. Once at the surface, it can be removed from the tube within its small confined area defined by the tube. Those skilled in the art will readily recognize that the present embodiment can be practiced with various modifications, such as but not limited to, various shapes, sizes, materials, including fabric, or plastic, fasteners or elements for receiving fasteners, ground surface anchoring methods and components, etc.
